World Wetlands Day Celebration - 02.02.2026

World Wetlands Day was celebrated on 2nd February 2026 at the Adyar Estuary, Chennai, under the Tamil Nadu Wetlands Mission. The event aimed to promote awareness on the importance of wetlands and encourage public participation in their conservation.

As part of the celebrations, a Nature Walk and Clean-up Activity were organised in coordination with the Chennai Forest Division and in collaboration with SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram Campus.

Senior officials from the Forest Department and Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority graced the occasion and highlighted the ecological importance of wetlands, particularly their role in biodiversity conservation, flood mitigation, and climate resilience.

Around 100 students actively participated in the programme. During the clean-up drive, 86 kg of waste (mainly soft plastics) was collected, segregated, and handed over for recycling through Spreco Recycling (OPC) Pvt. Ltd., an authorised recycling agency. The initiative also promoted sustainable waste management practices, with collected plastic proposed to be recycled into eco-friendly products.

The event successfully enhanced environmental awareness among students and emphasized the importance of community involvement in protecting wetland ecosystems.
